Special Community Meals
There are a lot of people around Vancouver who cannot afford to have two good meals a day. Food banks are set up by Voluntary Service Groups, known as Food Banks which provide food every day to hundreds of people across Canada. Food Banks receive contributions from many organizations and individuals to meet such needs.
Considering a social and moral responsibility, Akali Singh Sikh Society provides free food every week in the evenings for four days, Monday through Thursday. There are about one hundred (100) to hundred and fifty (150) people who are served food every day for four days a week.
Langar (the free community meal) is a potent symbol of social equality taught by the Sikh Gurus. Langar or free kitchen for all is part of all Gurdwaras across the world, which is a unique institution of Sikhism. Langar (Free meal) is served at the (Sikh) Gurdwaras for all visitors/travelers/passers by regardless of caste, class or creed. Akali Singh Sikh Society,in cooperation with the Congregation started the free community meals service many years ago.
People who know about this service from a friend or as a word of mouth, take advantage of it. Cooked vegetarian food is served to each and everyone for four days each week, except on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays when the Gurdwara facilities are reserved by some family members of the Society for weddings or other religious services.
