Keertan: In most simple terms, signifies the act of reciting/singing of (Hymns) Shabads (praises of God) from Guru Granth Sahib Jee. Compositions of Bhai Gurdas Jee and Bhai Nand Lal Jee are also used. These are mainly used for elaboration of Hymns from Guru Granth Sahib. Keertan can also be defined as devotional Hymn singing by a Group or an individual. By participating in Keertan, understanding it and practicing in daily life the message as enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib, one can keep under check, five major and hard to control evils (lust, anger, greed, ego with arrogance and over indulgence in sexual activities) in the life of a person.

The Keertan of the Lord's Praise is a priceless diamond. It is the ocean of bliss and virtue.

"Keertan Nirmolak Heera. Anand Guni gaheera"-- ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਹੀਰਾ॥ ਆਨੰਦ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ॥

Guru Angad Dev Jee empasized the importance of Keertan in one's life in the following words:

"Listening to the Keertan of the Lord's Praises, and singing the Lord's Keertan, one is enabled to keep under control five major evils and misfortunes caused by such evils shall not even come near you|| 2 ||"

"Har keertan sune, Har keertan gaave. Tis jan dookh, nikat na aave." 2॥

Thus Keertan with understanding of the message as enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib, followed by its practice in real life becomes a medium or path which would eventually lead one to union with God.
